Michael Sullivan

With training in statistics, mathematics, and economics, Dr. Mike Sullivan, III has a varied teaching background that includes 16 years of instruction in both high school and college-level maths. He is currently a full-time professor of mathematics and statistics at Joliet Junior College. Mike has numerous books in publication in addition to his Introductory Statistics Series, which include a Developmental Math series, and a Precalculus series, which he writes with his father, Michael Sullivan. Mike has built this textbook in the classroom, using feedback from his college students. He is well aware of the challenges of maths and stats students taking an introductory statistics course. His goal is for college students to be more informed interpreters of data, so that they will be better decision-makers and have stronger critical-thinking skills. When not in the classroom or writing, Sullivan enjoys spending time with his 3 children, Kevin, Michael,  and Marissa, and playing golf.

Helping today’s students think statistically

With Fundamentals of Statistics 2nd edition, author and instructor Mike Sullivan III draws on his passion for teaching and statistics to provide the tools needed to see that statistics is connected, not only within individual concepts, but also in the world at large.  This practical textbook takes advantage of the latest statistical software, enabling you to focus on building conceptual understanding rather than memorizing formulas. The author’s main goals are to generate and maintain reader interest, promote reader success and confidence, and provide extensive and effective opportunity for practice. Chapter topics include: Data Collection; Probability; Hypothesis Testing; The Normal Probability Distribution; The Binomial Probability Distributions; Confidence Intervals about a Single Parameter; and more. For those who are interested in learning stats as it relates to their lives. All resources, including the Student Activity Workbook and Author in the Classroom videos were created for Mike’s classroom to help you succeed and stay engaged.
